Tom has been in the jewelry business since 1976, when he and his father opened a store in the Center Mall, Moorhead, MN. In the late 1980s, when Gould Sr.’s health began to fail, his other son, John, bought the store. Tom began doing service work for a large number of area retailers, resizing rings and repairing jewelry. During this time, Tom began establishing himself in the retail market. He established his own shop in 1987 above the old Montgomery Ward store in Moorhead, selling a full line of fine jewelry except watches. Tom later bought a free-standing location at 302 2nd Ave. S., rehabbing one of the city’s oldest buildings. “We maintained that location until the city decided they wanted the property more than we did.” After taking a year’s hiatus, Tom bought the building at 420 8th St. S., “The intention was to be there long-term until I retired,” he says. But in 2003, the Goulds began building a home near Vergas, MN, commuting from there to Moorhead. They kept an apartment in Moorhead and maintained the business there, but became year-round lakes area residents. A shorter commute is only one reason for the Goulds’ move. Co-owner Kathy Gould, Tom’s wife, noted that their daughter lives in Perham, along with two grandchildren. “Grandma wants to be close,” she says. Kathy Gould also has resumed her career as a critical care nurse, work interrupted 14 years ago when she decided to stay home and raise her children. She went through the process of renewing her long-dormant nursing license and began working at the Perham Memorial Hospital. She found that the long layoff didn’t hurt her sills “All my cardiac stuff has come back like I was gone a month or two,” she says. The Goulds will be running the same kind of jewelry business in Perham as in Moorhead. They will also be expanding their selections to not only include rings, pendant, earrings, bracelets, and other jewelry, but more religious medals, confirmation and wedding gifts, and other celebratory items. They specialize in quality jewelry, and fast affordable service.
